Promoting free access to buses and shared bicycles for Cascais residents, students, and workers.
Cascais has been enduring a high rate of motorisation, which generates an overload of the infrastructure and contributes to environmental problems such as pollution, climate change, noise, urban sprawl, among others. To address these problems, the MobiCascais Program was launched in 2017. Despite the clear contribution of this program to reduce the CO2 emissions, the Municipality considered that it was essential to improve the quality and the supply of the service, while tending to the needs of the vulnerable groups of Cascais.
The first free transport initiative in Portugal was carried out by the Municipality of Cascais, that implemented the Free Mobility Program in January 2020. This initiative was a bold measure allowing residents, students, and workers of the municipality, of all ages, to have free access to buses and shared bicycles in the municipality, any time any day of the week, by using their identification card. The Program seeks to promote social inclusion by easily connecting the people to their jobs, social events, education, health care and leisure activities, as well as to create employment opportunities.
