Antalya’s Governance Model to a Carbon Neutral Future
Leading Climate Action in the Mediterranean
Status
City description
Antalya is Türkiye’s 5th most populous city and 6th in land area. It is a national leader in tourism and agriculture and features the country's second longest coastline. In 2023, it hosted 27 million tourists and had over 2.7 million residents. Its geographical and climatic conditions make it highly vulnerable to climate-related risks such as droughts, floods, forest fires, and biodiversity loss.
Challenge
Antalya faces pressing challenges from climate change, including increasing drought, extreme heat, floods, invasive species, and loss of biodiversity. These pose threats to local ecosystems, agriculture, tourism, and urban infrastructure.
Solution
Antalya has adopted a data-driven climate action roadmap integrating mitigation and adaptation, renewable energy transition, water conservation, ecosystem restoration, green mobility, and climate education, with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
