Communities protecting Nature in the heart of Santiago de Chile
Status
City description
Peñalolén, Chile, is a district of 272,913 residents spanning 54 km² in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago. Governed by a Mayor and City Council, it serves as an environmental hub, with commerce, micro-enterprises, and distributors driving its economy
Challenge
Prior to municipal management, Quebrada de Macul faced challenges related to environmental degradation, lack of public access, and insufficient conservation efforts. The area suffered from deforestation, uncontrolled human activity, and inadequate infrastructure, limiting its potential as a public and ecological resource.
Solution
Since 2005, the Municipality of Santiago has implemented a holistic management strategy to restore and conserve the park while ensuring free and democratic access. By establishing strong partnerships, developing educational programs, and investing in infrastructure, the park has been transformed into a model for sustainable urban biodiversity conservation and community engagement.
