This collection of systemic visualisations has been developed as a part of the NetZeroCities Design Your City’s Net Zero Strategy Online Planning Lab for Mission-minded cities to support municipal learners in understanding different areas of urban climate transition (e.g. governance and policy, action planning and MEL, technical solutions, financing, engagement, communication, and justice). They follow six teaching modules of the course.
Module 1 on EU Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission approach, NZC offer, and building climate narratives (How can the NetZeroCities support my city's climate transition goals?)

Module 2 on municipal Transition Teams, their role and mandate, as well as engaging citizens and provate sector (How can we develop capacity to work on the climate transition, go beyond working in silos and collaborate with the city's stakeholders?)

Module 3 on climate action planning with NetZeroPlanner, integrating CAPs in existing urban planning systems, portfolio approach, and learning from monitoring and evaluation (How might we design an effective climate action plan for and with the city?)

Module 4 on technical solutions (positive energy districts, passive solutions for buildings, digital solutions, sustainable mobility) and behavioural + business practice change (How might we leverage technical solutions, citizens-led solutions and partnerships to reduce emissions?)

Module 5 on financing urban climate transition: sources of finances, making climate projects bankable, and collaboration with different types of investors (How might we leverage technical solutions, citizens-led solutions and partnerships to reduce emissions?)

Module 6 on multi-level governance and national platforms, innovative policies and procurement, and social justice in transition process (How might we align local, regional, and national governance to develop effective policies that support the climate transition?)

Interactive versions of these visualisations are now being developed to create a better learning experience even outside of the context of the Online Planning Lab. In these interactive visualisations, users can zoom in to explore each element in greater detail, enhancing understanding and engagement. In 2026, they will become a part of the NZC Learning Hub. At the moment, you can access them directly from Centre for Systems Solutions servers (links below).
